What They Did: The Campaign

The Small Steps Campaign is a multi-media campaign to fight obesity with ads in print, on television, and online (specifically ads for TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, out of home, i.e. bus and subway, and web banners, all in both English and Spanish). The idea is that people can lose large amounts of weight permanently by taking small steps towards healthier living.

You can view all ads produced for the campaign through the Ad Council website. Our recommendations for each category are below.

Print Ads

The print ads for this campaign visually show the big effect of each small step taken in an overweight person's life.

All of these ads are great, though we like "Buff Daddy" and "Soccer Mom" the best.

TV Ads

The TV ads focus on the idea that people can leave their fatty bits behind by making minor (and often fun) changes in their daily lives.

For this category, we recommend "Belly" and "Butt," but again, they're all great!

Internet Campaign

All print, TV, and radio ads direct people to the HHS-run website, Small Step. This site has an incredible wealth of resources for people interested in knowing how they can live healthier.

It offers statistics and research on obesity, health benefits of exercise and a healthy diet, free recipies, a "calorie counter" for determining how many calories you've burned from an activity, as well as 118 small steps that everyone can take to get themselves healtier.

We strongly recommend reading through all of the small steps. They're incredibly easy and all good for you. The campaign has convinced us to take a few small steps ourselves!
